DESiGN:
Jack Kerouac served as the Desolation Peak fire lookout in the North Cascades of Washington State in 1954. When the packer took him up the hill the first day – it was fogged in. However in the middle of the night when he woke up — it had cleared and he shocked to see a giant bear he thought approaching the lookout whose only part he could see at the moment were the ears. Shortly afterward he recognized it as Hozomeen Peak — the next mountain to the north with its characteristic twin spires. I sketched this painting when I was working up there one night just after sunset……
